An attacking machine, his large structure and determination to gain wickets soon earned him the nickname " Tiger". Bill O'Reilly was one of the greatest of leg-spin bowlers - some say the best of all time.

WJ O'Reilly, first test, Brisbane, December 1936. The umpire is G Borwick.

The Irish- Australian, was born in the opal mining town of White Cliffs, the fourth of seven children of the local school teacher.
Three years older than Sir Don Bradman, the two were introduced to each other at a match between two country teams. On the second day, bowling for the wingello team, O'reilly took the wicket of the young batsman from the bowral team who had scored 234.
O'Reilly first played for N.S.W in 1927/28.

Before his retirement from cricket due to injury and to concentrate on cricket journalism in 1946, tiger had bagged 144 wickets in his 27 tests and been aclaimed by his one-time critic, Bradman, as the greatest bowler he had ever faced.
